I read a similar post that had the same problem as me but I think they had a different tranny. Mine is the m75 so I was wondering if that could still be the case with my car. Your response was something to do with flushing the transaxle oil cooler and replacing the lines?
I sure hope so because everyone else said my tranny must be shot but when this happened to me I was driving it and I just don't feel that it's the transmission. Thank you! Do you. Do you have the quad coupe or the four door sedan?
Was this answer. Sorry I never got a email that you responded if you have the quad coupe you have the vti transmission I was saying the most common repair is replace the transmission cooler lines flush cooler and replace the transmission side cover.
Before that a pressure test must be done to make sure the pressures are good so the new side cover isnt damaged by a pressure issue you have. Its really common for bad side covers. Not so much on the ions as the vues with the same transmission.

The Car Starts Normally Pictures Would Be Nice. Where Is The Bolt I Sponsored links. Ask a Car Question. It's Free!Saturn ION owners have reported 7 problems related to transmission not go into gear under the power train category. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
As I was driving along a city street last autumn, the transmission started shifting with a noticable jerk each time it went into another gear.
This is an automatic transmission. When I came to a stop light I put the car into park. When I put the car back into gear, there was an even stronger jerk. The jerking kept on each time the car shifted. At the next light I turned the car off during the red light and then turned it on when the light turned green. The problem continued, so I went straight to an auto repair shop. They were busy so I had to wait awhile, and then it took me awile to explain the problem.
When the technician went out to see what the problem was, the problem was gone. Isn't that soooo typical. This last summer, the same thing happened. This time I went home and let the car sit there for 15 to 20 minutes. The problem was gone again.
My fear is that this could happen at highway speed and god only knows what could happen then. See all problems of the Saturn ION. Was stopped at a red light; when it turned green, car did not accelerate. Had to be pushed off to side of road; turned car off, then re-started it. It drove a short distance, then had no power, but was able to coast safely to side of road. Car was towed to gas station.
Mechanic checked fluid level was good and did not have burnt smell. Tried to start car again - made low winding noise and would not go into gear. When gas pedal was pressed, the speedometer moved.
Mechanic said it needs new transmission. Car has 90, miles. I own a Saturn Ion and the power steering was going. I took the car into the dealership, they said the steering motor had to be replaced, now they replaced it for free, but made me wait a week and sent me back out on the road with a car that had power steering that worked sometimes and not other times.
Then two weeks later the entire car started to fail. The speedometer, the transmission would not switch gears, the power steering went again, and the breaks where pretty much gone. So after causing a big scene the car was looked at and found that the transmission module went on the car. So they replaced the part after making me wait two days to get my car back. My concern is why is a car that will be turning 5 years old next month and only has about 27, miles on it is having all these big problems.
In the matter of one mouth I have has a new brain put into the car. The customer service was awful and rude. They all try to blame each other. When I went to pick the car up the service people would not even talk to me they told me to see the cashier she has my keys. What more could you want? Let me tell you, the only thing the VTi did continuously was fail on its owners. GM scrapped it after only two model years. So how do you find out what problems are occurring? The Symptoms of a Bad Transmission Solenoid
Add Complaint. After only 9 months of owning my Ion I have experienced problems with shifting the car in and out of gear. It is a random occurrence and can happen 8 times in a week then not at all for months.
However when it does happen it is a life threatening experience as I am usually driving on a major highway. The car will be "locked" into 4th for example and when I try to shift to 5th I can not get it out of 4th. I have taken the car to the Saturn dealership a minimum of 20 times for this problem, only to be told that they could not do anything.
I then took it to a different dealership where the tech took the car home for 1 week, experienced the problem for himself, and told me all he could do was replace a wire and hope it helped because Saturn would not let him investigate any more options. It did absolutely nothing to help my car. And since the last time my car has been at the Saturn dealership my power steering now goes in and out.
Apparently they busted a seal and failed to mention that to me, so not only do I have to worry about not being able to shift, but also losing my power steering. They only solution I can come up with is to try my best to get the car to a safe spot and turn it off and let it sit. This car has had more problems than anyone should have to deal with: Reverse switch going out, airconditioning going out, power windows no longer work, power steering, and not being able to shift.
I have to drive this everyday with my children in the car with me at most times. This should have all been taken care under the orig. Warranty, as it all happened within the first months of owning the car. Lol that's what I get for buying a GM product. The contact owns a Saturn Ion. The clutch pedal on the vehicle has a retainer that does not have the proper durability. After a few months, the retainer detaches and causes the clutch pedal to raise upwards.
As a result, the driver is unable to properly switch gears fast enough. When the failure first occurred on July 20,the dealer replaced the cylinder axulator, master clutch, the entire clutch pedal, and the retainer. The repair lasted for 15 months. Recently, while attempting to switch gears at 15 mph, the contact noticed that the clutch had once again lost the retainer and caused the pedal to raise.
The contact was unable to determine where the clutch was located, which nearly caused a crash. He called the dealer and was informed that the vehicle could not be repaired for free because it was no longer under warranty.
The contact believes that this is a safety issue that the manufacturer should be responsible for repairing.
He called the manufacturer directly and they refused to make any repairs. The vehicle currently has not been repaired. If your car doesn't move when you put it into gear, it may be due to a simple oversight or you may have a serious transmission problem. The source of the probelm may depend on whether your car has an automatic or manual transmission.
You can check for a few causes yourself, but you may need to have your car towed to a mechanic to determine the source of the problem. Ensure your car is turned on. This may seem obvious, but some cars run so quietly that you may think the car is on when it really isn't. Ensure you have disengaged the parking brake. The parking brake can prevent the car from moving even when it is in gear. Ensure that the shifter is fully engaged in gear if it is a manual transmission. Sometimes the clutch pedal is not sufficiently depressed to allow the shifter to go completely in gear.
Try pushing the clutch pedal all the way to the floor and attempt to put the shifter into gear, then try giving it gas.
Also, remember that after you put the shifter into gear, the clutch pedal must be disengaged to place the car into gear. Try starting from a different gear. Try all gears, including reverse. This helps determine if a single gear is causing a problem or if it's the entire transmission.
Check your transmission fluid if it is an automatic transmission. Your car's owner's manual will detail where the transmission fluid dipstick is located. You should engage your parking brake, leave it in Park and turn the car on. Then check the transmission fluid by pulling out the dipstick, wiping it with a clean cloth, then reinserting the dipstick. When you remove the dipstick again, check the level, color and smell of the fluid. If the fluid level is low, try adding some more fluid to bring it within the "Cold" or "Hot" zones, depending on the heat of the engine.
If the fluid is dark brown or black, or smells burnt, you may have a serious transmission problem. And how long until GM chooses to address it? The Ion has a defective ignition switch that gave owners fits. The ignition was eventually recalled as part of one of the largest recalls of all-timebut it took GM 10 years to do it.Symptoms Of Low Transmission Fluid

Ding on dashboard and power steering goes out.
When first occurred, I could drive about minutes before it happened again. Now it happens as soon as I get into car. I have a Saturn Ion with 35, miles, bought new in October and only serviced at Saturn. It slips when put into reverse. The dealer could replicate the problem manually but could not get a trouble code.
Although a service bulletin was issued, the dealer will do nothing until and unless it will generate a code, and says they will not repair it under warranty. I called Saturn customer service and they told me the same thing.
Goes in gear but won't Move
They also will not sell me a GM extended warranty because it is out of warranty on length of time. I am told to continue to drive it until it gets bad enough that it will produce a trouble code. By that time it will undoubtedly no longer be close to the warranty mileage and it will probably cost as much as the car is worth to repair it.
Since it has less than 36, miles, I want it repaired now at no cost. I got in my car to go to work on Monday March 16, The car started. When I put the car in reverse to back out of my garage, the doors locked but the car would not go backward. The car is now at the dealers for trouble shooting. Search CarComplaints. My automatic Saturn Ion with 61K miles and no signs of a problem, on its own downshifted from about 65miles to 30 miles.
Once I moved it over one lane to the emergency lane the car would not move forward in any gear. The analysis was that the transmission was completely gone. I believe it is a bad design for a car to give no warnings and then downshift on it own. With the car stopping so abruptly, if my family and I had been on the interstate we probably would have been killed or severely injured in an accident. I contacted Saturn directly concerning this matter.

Carolyn I am assuming this is a manual transmission. It may be due to your clutch not fully disengaging. Have you noticed the shifter being hard to move between gears?

The first assumption we make when the vehicle does not move while in gear, is that the transmission fluid is low. Start by checking the level and the condition of the fluid. If it is low, then there is a leak that will need to be addressed. If the fluid is full, then you will want to focus in on the shift linkage to assure that the transmission is actually shifting into gear.
From there further inspection will need to be done on the transmission and its mechanical components. Other possibilities would include mechanical failure, a pump issue, a detached line, and similar issues. For more help, contact our service department to schedule an appointment.
